Dane started his communications career 20 years ago as the first Chief of the Consumer & Governmental Affairs Bureau at the FCC where he focused on disability access, telemarking rules, consumer complaints and consumer policy. Joining CTIA-The Wireless Association® as its first Vice President of External & State Affairs, Dane created, managed, and directed the Association’s comprehensive 50-state policy program and external affairs efforts. He worked closely with State regulators, legislators, Attorneys General, and Governors to advance wireless industry public policy. Recognized for his leadership, Dane was tapped to be the first Chief Operating Officer of the NCTA-The Internet & Television Association where he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the Trade Association focused on cable policy and strategic initiatives. Dane later entered the tech industry, leading the Internet Association as its President & CEO and focused on privacy and content moderation.

With a deep appreciation for emerging technologies and innovation, Dane is nationally recognized as a public policy thought leader, strategic tactician, and trade association executive with a focus on board strategy, advocacy and organizational management. Dane speaks regularly on various communications issues and has frequently testified in the US Senate, US House and over 35 state legislatures on various communication and consumer policy issues.

In his free time, Dane has Chaired and served various nonprofit boards that focused on the needs for children and young people, LGBTQ+ youth, financial planning, and the cable industry. Dane is a graduate of the College of William & Mary where he earned his B.A. and is married to Spencer Hurd, and they have a precocious daughter, Harper Ann, and a chill pup, BowTie.
