On Saturday, September 15, 2012, Russ Hanser made a presentation at the first annual symposium of the 100 Year Starship Initiative, a DARPA-funded project dedicated to making the capability of human travel beyond our solar system to another star a reality over the next 100 years. Russ’s presentation, entitled “Funding the Future: Lessons from Contemporary Regulation,” addressed likely barriers to optimal private-sector investment in technologies necessary to long-range space-flight, and ways in which public policy might be used to promote such investment.
